The Sound Magazine & The Audience

Some very important details on my target audience are:
•    The primary audience are prominently male as they would have 60% of the readership.
•   They would be individualists, in the group of ABC1.
•   The whole magazine would have a circulation of 280,000 people monthly, however the readership will be 300,000.
•   The target audience will be older teenagers to young adults, such as 16 - 22 years old.

An example of a reader of my magazine is an 18-year-old white male called Stephan Earnst. He is in the class ABC1, he supports the political party of labour, as he is a strong believer of liberalism and the left wing, and he works in a music store everyday of the week apart from Sunday’s, which he chooses to see his friends. He earns an average wage at work, however he chooses to continue to work here at this job as he lives and breathes rock music, as it informs his choice of friends, his hobbies, leisure time, his fashion sense and his lifestyle. He is a typical skater, however he is also classed as a metaller. His favourite bands are Stereophonics and Biffy Clyro; he always attends their gigs within his home city of London. Stephan believes that being different, as he is, is cool.

What makes magazines Successful?
Different attributes make the magazines in today’s society successful:
  •  Don’t change the target audience of the magazine. Stick to one theme. – Smash Hits started making a gossip magazine towards the end of their time, and lost their buyers / fans of the magazines, and unfortunately went out of business.
  • Giving out freebies, such as CDS, posters, etc.
  •  Advertising that relates to the target audiences preferences, the class of the target audience and the genre of the magazine. EG, Electric guitars // rock magazine
  • Giving the audience a chance to have their say about what is to be put in the magazine, such as polls and forums.
  • Have competitions and contests to get the audience to interact and get competitive. This also reveals to the magazine company what the consumers prefer.
  •  Feature popular artists/bands of the music genre.
  •  Have a range of mediums that the company is based on – such as Kerrang, it has a magazine, radio station, website, award show, etc.
