Key Definitions:
Institutions - The business side of the media.
Independent -  An independent piece of media that is not dependant on anything else for it to function. 
Mainstream - What is considered as normal.
Multi-Platform - where a brand exploits the different delivery systems for the media, including print, broadcasting and e-media.
Cross-Platforms - Cross Platform is a software or hardware thatn runs indenitcally on different platform (types of medias.)
Niche Market - A smaller group within a broad media audience eg. music fans.
Diversity - The state of being diverse; a variety.




Maslow's Heirchary of Needs
 
Abraham Maslow's theory about what a humans need, from the basic requirements for survival to what makes us happy. This theory was proposed is in his 1943 paper "A Theory of Human Motivation".

NME Magazine

NME magazine is a UK based magazine based on the alternative/ punk rock music genre, which has been published weekly since March 1952. It originally began as a music newspaper which gradually changed to the format of a magazine during the 1980s. It was the first British paper to include a singles chart which was in the 14th of November 1952 edition. In the 1970s it became the best-selling British Music newspaper.
Online
The online version of NME magazine was launched in 1996. It is the worlds biggest standalone music website, and it has over 7 million users per month.
NME Originals
In 2002, NME started publishing a series of themed magazines that reprinted vintage articles, interviews and reviews from NME archives. The magazine special editions were called NME Originals. Some of the most notable issues so far have featured Radiohead, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Nirvana and more. The most recent issue of a NME original was published in 2005.



Kerrang Magazine

Kerrang is a UK based magazine that is based on rock music. It is released weekly in the UK. The founder Geoff Barton published the magazine for first time in 1981 on June 6th, it was only published as a segment of the newspaper 'Sounds'. The publisher for the magazine is now Bauer Media Group. In the early 2000s it became the best selling British music magazine! 
The masthead of the magazine 'Kerrang' is based on the onomatopoeic word for the sound made when playing a power chord on an electric guitar. 
History 
The first appearance of a musical act on Kerrang was Angus Young of AC/DC.During the 80s/90s had many thrash and glam metal acts on the cover. These acts invited Bon Jovi, Metallica and Venom. But later, thhey discarded them as grunge acts. This was in the time Nirvana rose to fame.  The readers often criticise the magazine for repetition it creates everytime a new musical trend becomes popular. Kerrang's popularity rose when the nu metal genre, which includes bands Limp Bizkit and Slipknot.In 2005, the commencement of the emo and metalcore music started. Kerrang featured this musical trend immediatly.
Awards
Since 1993, Kerrang magazine have held annual award ceremonies that mark the most the successful bands in the interests of their readers. These awards are one of Britain's most recognised awards and events - said by Guinness Book of British Hit Singles and Albums.
International
Emap publishing launched Kerrang in Australia in the 90s. The Australian edition of Kerrang was published Monthly due to stiff competition from free local music publications! Kerrang is published in German and Spanish.
